Sharjah Edge Out Emirates 2-1
Relegation-battlers Emirates suffered a third defeat in a row with a 1-2 loss at Sharjah in round 23 of the Arabian Gulf League. The result leaves Emirates in a critical situation, five points adrift of safety with just three matches to go. Sharjah meanwhile, raise their tally to 24 points in tenth place.
Sharjah fan Khaled Al Nouman and Emirates fan Ahmed Adnan Al Hammadi were honoured ahead of kick-off as part of the PLC's "Willpower Beats Disability" for their persistence in supporting their teams throughout the season.
After a goalless first period, the hosts took the lead in the 55th minute when defender Shaheen Abdulrahman converted an in-swinging corner kick from club captain Adrian Mierzejewski into the back of Ali Saqr's net.
Emirates equaliser a few minutes later when Khaled Shamarikh's long throw-in was nodded on by his fellow defender Hadef Saif before striker Sebastian Sacha applied a half-volleyed finish from close-range to bring his team level in the 53rd minute.
Sharjah restored their lead in the 79th minute in a similar manner as left-back Al Hasan Saleh sent a long throw-in that beat everyone in the box before Venezuelan striker Gelmin Rivas headed at the far post for his eighth goal of the season to hand Sharjah an important win that officially secures their place in the top flight for next season.
